On March 7, 2017, Trail Life Troop OR-1531 learned some fishing basics. Dad and noted sportsman, Tom Pavelek, taught the boys how to set up a fishing pole, while discussing what types of bait to use, appropriate reels for different types of fishing, where to find fish, and fishing safety. Tom also showed the boys how to tie a fisherman’s knot, the third knot in the toolkit (joining the slip knot and square knot). Each of the boys was able to set up their own fishing pool and are excited at the prospect of fishing during the June camping trip.
After playing a game involving knots and casting makeshift poles, the boys settled down for a discussion on wisdom, headed by Stephen Kenyon, a seminarian at Mt. Angel assigned to St. Joseph. After Proverbs 2:6 was read there was a lively discussion on what wisdom was and where we could find it. All of the boys remembered “Mr. Stephen’s” distinction that “Knowledge is learning how to tie a knot and wisdom is know what to do with it.”
